Langkawi

It has been a while since we let you know what we have been up to. That is because it is really BORING! Not for us. Just for you.
We arrived in Langkawi, Malaysia over a month ago, and except for a 4 day trip back to Kuala Lampur to visit our friends again and one afternoon of sight-seeing, we have been working on the boat. This is an aerial photo of Langkawi where we are anchored.
We were in a marina for one week while Stephen did some work on the engine and our sail was at the sail makers for some repairs. We decided we did not want to remain at anchor in case a big storm came up and the anchor dragged We would have neither of our two means of propulsion.
On the first night in the marina, there was a murder!!! A French boat on our dock went out for a sail and when it returned, the owner had been stabbed with a machete. With him on the boat were his wife and her mother and her sister and her sister’s husband. Sounds like an Agatha Christie novel to me. Anyways, it made for some really juicy gossip.
After our engine repairs, we went back out to anchor for two weeks and continued to do work on the boat. Nothing major, just maintenance stuff….varnishing, cleaning stainless steel, replacing lights with led bulbs so they don’t use so much power, blah, blah, blah. It isn’t very exciting but it is stuff we needed to do.
On Wednesday and Saturday nights, we would walk into town to go to the night market. It was really cool. There were the usual stalls with fruits and vegetables, Chinese herbal remedies, tacky souvenirs, t-shirts and our favourite…food. \
There were several stalls that sold delicious Chicken satay with peanut sauce so we tried them all to find out whose was best. We haven’t decided yet so we are going to keep comparing.
For 1 Malaysian ringgit ($0.35 Canadian) you can buy a glass of delicious fruit juice. There were many flavours and colours to choose from. The coconut water, orange and lichee nut were all very good.
There are a lot of other mysterious looking items there( which with the language barrier) we are never quite sure what they are so we just have to try one and find out. When we came across the corn on the cob stall, we were very excited. It didn’t take any explaining and it tasted great…just like home.
After a couple weeks at anchor, we took advantage of some really good deals to fly back to Kuala Lampur to visit Steve’s friend Michael Ho and his family. Air Asia had deals for about $40 Canadian return. We saw more of the city, ate lots of good food and had a great visit.
One of the things we saw in KL, was the fish spa. It seems to be pretty popular with the tourists. There is a certain type of fish that loves to eat the dead skin off your feet. How anyone discovered this is a mystery to me but for $30, you can sit in the spa for an hour and let the fish nibble on your feet. I didn’t try it. I’m too ticklish.
